User case: BFSVC Error: could not open the BCD template store in Windows 10

I have installed a new hard disk drive on my Acer Aspire 771. I made a USB recovery stick as well as recovery cd of the Windows 10 64 bit running on the former HD (which got corrupted, so no cloning possible). After two days of struggling, I managed to get the recovery going, but it aborted at about 80 % of loading. As before, the system is not booting, and only the recovery disk helps me to get the command promt (all other repair options fail). I tried to recreate the BCD, but it shows BFSVC Error: could not open the BCD template store.I'm getting into slight dispair...Thanks for any suggestions.

- Question from Super User

The error message indicates that the "BCD Template" is either missing or unreadable. This template is located in the \Windows\System32\Config folder and is essential for the bcdboot command, which recreates the BCD on the system partition. The likely cause of the issue is that the BCD files have become corrupted or are missing. To resolve this, you can attempt to rebuild the BCD files.

Other methods to fix BFSVC Error: Could not open the BCD template store in Windows 10

Apart from the direct method of fixing issues like repairing the BCD files, you can also try using some built-in Windows tools to solve the problem.

Method 1. Run Command Prompt as an Administrator

Step 2. Click on Yes when you are prompted with the UAC window to open the elevated Command Prompt. Then you can run the bcdedit repair command again and see if the error disappears.

Method 2. Change the Boot Mode

You need to ensure that the partition you are booting from matches the boot mode type (BIOS or UEFI). If they don’t match, you might see the error "The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The requested system device cannot be found." To fix this, you can change the boot mode to match your partition type.

Step 1. Start your computer, and then hold the F2 and Delete hotkey before the computer is booted. By doing so, you will enter BIOS in Windows 10.
