The possible reason for “why is my new computer so slow”
A variety of factors can cause computers to function slowly. However, the leading cause of the sluggish performance is either software or hardware problem. Once you've determined which of the two is causing your computer to operate slowly, you can go on to the fixes.
The common reasons that make your new computer so slow are:
• Windows and drives are not updated
• Too many background/startup programs
• Installing many programs takes up memory
• Not enough cache data for quick data access
…
In this post, we’ll show you some ways to check PC and hard disk health and some tricks to help you try to speed up your new computer. If you’re troubled with a new computer running slow, hope this post will help you solve the problem.
Test hard disk speed for your new computer
To know the exact speed of your hard disk, you need to use a test tool. Here, we recommend you a free test tool AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard. This free tool has a “Disk Speed Test” function to help you know your hard drive performance clearly.
The operation is quite simple. This tool can test the read/write speed of your disk, you just need to choose the target drive and run the test.
Step 1. Download and install this disk speed test utility, then launch it. On the main interface, click "Test" menu and select “Disk Speed Test”.
Step 2. The default mode is Simple Mode, click “Start” to run a simple speed test. Or click "Pro Mode" to get a more comprehensive test we introduced above.
Step 3. After the test, you can click “Export” to see the test result.
6 ways to speed up your slow new computer
If your disk speed indeed has some problem, then you can try the following methods to improve your disk performance.
1. Check Windows updates
When your computer suddenly slows down, Windows may have a new version that needs to be updated. Ensure your machine has the most recent Windows and disc to obtain the most extraordinary PC performance. New Windows and drive upgrades increase performance, but obsolete operating systems cause PC speeds to degrade.
You may access the control panel in "Start", then click "Update and Security", under "Windows Update", pick "Check for Updates" to update the Windows system.
2. Reboot the PC and disable startup programs
When you run many apps, programs, web browsers, and so on at the same time, your computer will slow down. Apps created for earlier versions of Windows may still work on Windows 10, but they will slow down your machine. Furthermore, having a big number of browser tabs open at the same time might consume a substantial amount of PC resources. Close any superfluous apps and browser tabs to see if it improves PC performance. You may restart your computer and launch the apps, programs, and browser windows you need.
Please open the "Task Manager" to examine which background apps are running on your PC and how much memory and processing power they consume.
To disable the startup programs, you need to go to Settings > Apps> Startup Apps to turn off unnecessary startup apps.
3. Remove unnecessary software
Your computer comes pre-installed with a slew of software that the majority of users will never use, but which may eat up a lot of system resources and disc space. These are often detected by a pop-up prompting you to upgrade a previously unknown application.
Step 1. Click on the "Start" button and visit the “All apps” menu.
Step 2. You can view a list of the applications you have installed - and the ones you haven’t. Once you find the program you want to uninstall, right-click on the icon to see the "Options" menu.
4. Move installed programs to another drive/disk
If you don’t want to uninstall your programs like games or others and there is another drive or disk on your PC, you can also employ a tool to move some large apps to another location.
Here, we recommend you upgrade to AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional. Its “App Mover” feature can help you easily change the installed program location to effectively release large free space from C drive.
▶ Notes: Make sure the target drive has sufficient free space to save all you move. If a notice tells you the space is insufficient, you can extend the partition at first.
Step 1. Run AOMEI Partition Assistant, click “Free up” > “App Mover”.
Step 2. In the new window, click “App Mover”. If you wish to move Users folders or Profiles folders, you can click “Move Folders”.
Step 3. In the pop-up window, choose the partition that you want to free up via moving apps (here is partition C) and click “Next”.
Step 4. In the window, all movable apps on the C drive will be listed. You can choose one or multiple apps that you need to move and the destination partition. Then click “Move” to execute the operation.
Step 5. Confirm that you have closed the apps that you will move from C drive to D drive. Then, click "OK".
Step 6. Wait for the move process to complete. Then, click "Finish".
5. Remove irrelevant files
The irrelevant files refer to junk files in your system and disks. If you have never cleared junk files since you start to use your computer, then you can use the clean tool to scan your system and disks to filter junk files and clean them to keep your PC healthy.
AOMEI Partition Assistant can also do this for you. The “PC Cleaner” function can scan your computer and dig out all junk files to help you completely clean your PC. This function is also available in the Standard Edition.
Step 1. Open AOMEI Partition Assistant and click "Free up" and "PC Cleaner" in turn.
Step 2. Click "Start Scan" in the new pop-up window to scan your computer for unwanted files.
Step 3. After starting the scan, please wait for a while until the progress bar is loaded.
Step 4. Unneeded data will be automatically selected, you can directly click "Clean All" to delete them. If you still have other unnecessary files, you can tick the boxes of the corresponding files.
Step 5. When you see a correct symbol displayed in the interface, you can click "Back" to leave the function.
Tip: If your system disk is an HDD, you can also use the “Disk Defrag” function to improve hard drive performance.
6. Extend system drive space
If there is more than one partition or unallocated space on your disk, AOMEI Partition Assistant can help you quickly extend C drive space.
For users whose disk has unallocated space, we suggest you use the “Merge Partition” feature to merge this space into your C drive. This tool supports merging nonadjacent partitions and spaces into one, so you can easily extend your C drive with unallocated space.
Step 1. Open AOMEI Partition Assistant, right-click the partition you need to merge, find "Advanced" and choose "Merge Partitions".
Step 2. Choose the partition or space that you need to be merged and click OK.
Step 3. In the main interface, after confirming the operation, click Apply and Proceed to commit it.
For users whose system disk has more than one partition, if another partition has sufficient space, then you can choose the “Allocate Free Space” feature to directly add part of space from that drive to your C drive.
Step 1. Open this tool and you will see enough free space on drive D. Right-click it and choose the button "Allocate Free Space".
Step 2. The following picture will show up. It will give you the detail. Choose the size and destination drive you want.
Step 3. Please click "Apply" to commit. After that, another window will show up. Please select "Proceed". The picture below shows all your operations are finished.
