Fixed: The Volume Requires Contiguous Disk Extents
Get "The volume requires contiguous disk contents" while extending volume using Disk Management or Diskpart? You can find out possible solutions in this post.
When will you receive this error?
When you are trying to extend a volume on a dynamic disk in Windows built-in tool Disk Management, you may receive the error the volume requires contiguous disk extents.
If you try this in DiskPart, you will receive the same error message Virtual Disk Service error:
The volume requires contiguous disk extents.
How does the Extend Volume in Disk Management work?
On a basic disk, Windows Disk Management or DiskPart allows you to extend a partition only when there is contiguous unallocated space right behind the volume that you are trying to extend. When you actual have contiguous unallocated space on the left of the volume to be extended, you will see the Extend Volume option greyed out.
On dynamic disk, Disk Management is supposed to be able to extend volume as long as there is unallocated space no matter whether it is contiguous or not. Therefore, if you receive the DiskPart extend the volume requires contiguous disk extents error, there must be some uncertain reasons behind this error.
Possible solution
You can try one or more of the steps below to work it out:
1. Close all the programs that might affect the volume status.
2. Use the unallocated space to create a new volume and then delete it.
3. Restart your computer.
If the Extend Volume still fails after all these steps, you may consider reformatting the hard drive or trying third party software.
Extend volume with third-party software
Dynamic Disk Manager, available in AOMEI Partition Assistant Advanced editions, can help you extend volume in a more flexible way. Do the following steps to extend a dynamic volume:
Step1. Install and run AOMEI Partition Assistant. Right-click the target disk, and choose “Dynamic Disk Manager”.
Step 2. After launching AOMEI Dynamic Disk Manager. Then, right-click volume which you want to extend and select "Resize/Move Volume" in the drop-down menu.
Step 3. In the pop-up window, drag the right slider rightwards to extend to the point where you want it to be. Then, click "OK".
Step 4.Then you can preview the volume layout after the operation. If no problem, click "Commit" on the toolbar to save the changes.
As you can see, AOMEI Dynamic Disk Manager can easily resize volume on a dynamic disk without data loss. With this software, you can easily solve the problem, the volume requires contiguous disk extents. For basic disk, you can use AOMEI Partition Assistant for basic disk management, such as merge partitions, resize partition, and conver MBR to GPT without data loss. In addition, more advanced functions such as allocate free space, convert system disk between MBR and GPT, and convert primary partition to logical are supported by AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional.
