Windows 8 built-in Disk Management Tool

Windows 8 has the function of resizing partition as Windows 7 in its built-in tool Disk Management (DM). We can see the following Windows 8 Disk Management by Right-click "Computer", select "Manage" and then click "Disk Management" in "Storage" folder.

Besides extend system partition Windows 8, there are some other functions like shrink partition, delete partition and format hard disk.

  • Windows 8 Disk Management has the same limitations as in Windows 7 Disk Management:

  • It doesn't allow users to operate "Move Partition" or "Resize System Partition" (when there is no unallocated space right behind system C partition).

  • It cannot shrink the volume beyond the point where the unmovable files are located, or, it can only shrink basic volumes that have no file system or use the NTFS file system.

Because of such limitations, users need to search some professional partition software such as partition magic Windows 8 alternative, AOMEI partition software to resize partitions, which can help you to increase or reduce the disk space of partition without any limitation.

AOMEI Partition Assistant Pro Edition, which can resize partition directly without losing data for users, is a professional partition manager. This competitive software has three easy-to-use wizards to simplify extend and shrink partition operations, copy partition and disk operations, and even resize BitLocker partition. Tips: AOMEI Partition Assistant is also fully compatible with the latest Windows 8.1, and the steps of extending system partition in Windows 8.1 are the same as those to extend system partition Windows 8.

  1. Launch AOMEI Partition Assistant Pro, view the whole partition configuration.

  2. As we can see there is no unallocated space. So, we need to shrink F. Right-click F, choose “Resize/Move Partition”. and the program will pop-up a new window, then drag the handle rightwards. Then click "OK".

Tip: While using DM, if there is no unallocated space, expand disk Windows 8 can’t move further anymore.

  3. The unallocated space will be behind c: after step 2 done. Then right-click C, then select "Resize Partition" and drag the handle rightwards. Then click "OK".

Tip: If you drag the handle from right leftwards, the unallocated space will be behind F partition and not right behind C partition. Then, you have to first move F partition to put it after the unallocated space and make unallocated space before F and right after C. Then, you can extend partition Windows 8.

  4. Before click the "Apply" on the tool bar to commit the operations, we can preview the changes in "Pending Operations". When an error occurs, the "Undo" "Redo" and "Discard" buttons can help correct the last step of the operation. All done, you can see the partition redistribution as the following screenshot.

You can't wait to try its magic feature, do you? Furthermore, you can use this tool to let Windows 7 extend system partition as well.

Note: Partition Magic Windows 8 - AOMEI Partition Assistant cannot add free space from one partition in A disk to target partition in B disk. It can only reallocate free space with the same hard drive.
