About "Merge Partitions"

Merge Partitions means to combine two or more partitions together. It’s another kind of way to extend a partition size. In fact, it comes with two cases: One is to merge two adjacent partitions into one partition; the other is to merge unallocated space into a partition. Anyway, the specific instructions will be mentioned later.

Although Windows built-in Disk Management has the function “Extend Volume”, there are many limitations. For example, if you want to extend a partition with an unallocated space, the unallocated space must locate adjacent to that partition and only on the right side. Moreover, If you want to merge partitions, you should delete the other partition before since Disk Management can’t directly resize the partition. Fortunately, freeware AOMEI Partition Assistant avoids such troubles. The following instructions will show you how to merge partitions in Windows 7 with this software. It supports Windows 8/8.1/10, too.

3 steps to merge Windows 7 partitions

Things should know: 1st, this operation may change the original location of your data. You’d better know how to safely partition. 2nd, “System Reserved” partition could not be merged. 3rd, the boot partition or system partition can not be merged into a data partition. Then, download AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Version. Install and launch it.

Case 1: Merge two partitions into one

This applies to the situation that one of your partitions is running out of space while other partitions are nearly empty. However, only two partitions which are adjacent to each other can be merged.

Step 1: Right click the partition you intend to extend (here is C). Select “Merge Partitions”. Choose “Advanced” and select “Merge Partition”.

Step 2: Tick the partition to merge and click “OK”.

Step 3: You may view the change. Click “Apply” to execute.

Case 2: Merge unallocated space into a partition

You can extend a partition with unallocated space even the space is not next to it through this method.

Step 1: Also right click C and choose “Advanced” and select “Merge Partition”.

Step 2: Tick two unallocated space. Actually you are able to tick more if you have.

Step 3: Click “Apply” to commit the operation.

So no matter in which case, with AOMEI Partition Assistant, just 3 steps you can realize resizing a partition easily. But pay attention that if there’s any application running on the partition, the operation may perform under PreOS mode.
