Lots of users met the “This PC can’t run Windows 11” warning when they use the PC Health Check program, and some of them received the “TPM2.0 is a requirement for running Windows 11” prompt. People seem to be very unfamiliar with this “new” thing.

What’s TPM2.0 and how do I check TPM on my PC?

A Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is a microchip integrated into the PC motherboard or separately added to the CPU. This chip allows computers to use advanced security features. We can simply call it the "secure processor" of the computer.

As early as the Windows 8 era, there was a demand for TPM chips in computers. It’s used to verify the integrity of the system when Windows starts and to store the key files required for security functions such as facial recognition, fingerprint recognition, and full disk encryption.

The TPM 2.0 standard was formulated and implemented in 2016, and its previous version, TPM 1.2, was an old product from 2011. Secondly, compared to TPM 1.2, the biggest change of TPM 2.0 is to greatly increase the types and security of the encryption algorithm built into the module.

Now TPM 2.0 has two main functions: ▶ 1. One is the key calculation, which involves using the computer's built-in encryption methods to construct or verify the password. These passwords can be disk encryption, or feature codes used by the operating system to verify its integrity to check whether the program has been tampered with. ▶ 2. The other, the TPM itself is also an encrypted storage unit in the computer. It can not only calculate the key but also store the key. And the TPM uses a completely dedicated circuit, the entire calculation and storage process can go through the memory, and will not leave a trace in the hard disk, which supplies impressively high security.

To check your computer whether has the TPM 2.0 or not, you can follow these steps:

Step 1. Press “Windows” + “R” together, and then type “tpm.msc” and click “OK”.

Step 2. In the TPM management window, if the “Status” lab shows “The TPM is ready for use”, then the TPM is enabled. You can check the TPM version in the right corner.

How to install Windows 11 without TPM2.0?

Although TPM2.0 is a requirement for Windows 11 upgrade, the answer to "can I install Windows 11 without TPM2.0?" is yes. It’s risky but possible to install Windows 11 download without TPM2.0. You’ll need to change some settings in the Registry to bypass the TPM check progress during the installation, however, please remember, you can’t get any updates in the future. What’s worse, the change might affect the compatibility of some system files, which may cause a system crash or other irreversible consequences if you insist to download Windows 11 without TPM 2.0.

Now, let's see how to upgrade to Windows 11 without TPM.

Step 1. After you download Windows 11, you can try to install the system as usual, when you see “This PC can’t run Windows 11”, press “Shift” and “F10”, and type “regedit” to open “Registry Editor”. Find “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup”.

Step 2. Right-click on the right, select “New” > “Key” to add a new registry key on the left side of the editor. Please name it “LabConfig”.

Step 3. Under the “LabConfig” key, right-click to create two "DWORD (32-bit) Value” options to create a new DWORD value.

Step 4. Name them as “BypassTPMCheck”, then click these two each twice, change the “Value data” from “0” to “1”.

Then you can install Windows 11 normally.

If you need to use Windows 11 in the future, we still suggest you try to meet the requirements of Windows 11 for TPM2.0 for PC safety. You can search TPM2.0 from an online shop, and make sure your device has a TPM chip port, and search for one which can match your device brand.

Further tip: About Secure Boot

In all the requirements of Windows 11 upgrade, TPM 2.0 chip is not the only one that makes users annoying, Secure Boot too. It is a unique feature of UEFI boot mode. UEFI is a newer boot mode than Legacy BIOS. You can enable Secure Boot in UEFI, but you have to set a GPT disk as your system disk, if your system disk is an MBR disk, you’ll need to convert it to a GPT disk.

As it is a system disk, Disk Management might not allow you to finish the conversion without any data loss. You’ll be asked to clean the entire disk during the operations or the button is greyed out to forbid you to execute the conversion. At this moment, you can choose AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional to finish this for you, it can convert MBR disk to GPT style without asking users to delete any data. And you can use it to clone disk/partition, allocate free space without data loss, convert file system, etc.
