“I have a Windows 10 based Dell computer with UEFI boot mode. Now I want to create a Windows 10 bootable USB and manage to boot my computer from it. Nevertheless, I don’t know what I should do? Is there anyone who can give me a detailed tutorial on how to make UEFI boot USB of Windows 10?”

2 Ways to create UEFI bootable USB of Windows 10  for installation

If you create the bootable USB drive with the purpose of installing Windows 10 on a computer using UEFI  firmware types, instead of BIOS, there are two common methods to complete the task: one is using the Microsoft Media Creation Tool to download the files onto the Windows ISO files onto the USB; the second one is using the diskpart commands to mount the ISO files onto the removable storage. Next we will walk you through the steps to create a bootable USB drive for UEFI computers.

βœ”1. Create bootable USB via Microsoft Media Creation Tool

To create a USB installation media for UEFI device via this methods, first connect an empty USB of at least 8 GB to your computer and download the Media Creation Tool on the Microsoft support website.

Then, follow the steps below:

Step 1. Lauch the MediaCreation Tool on your computer and click "Accept" to agree to the applicable license terms.

Step 2. Select the "Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) for another PC option", and click on "Next".

Step 3.Choose the language, edition, and architecture (64-bit or 32-bit) for Windows 10.

Step 4. In this window, select "USB flash drive" and click on "Next".

Step 5. Choose your USB flash drive from the list, then ”Next”.

Once these steps are completed, the tool will start to download the latest Windows 10 installation files to your device. Then you can use the bootable USB flash drive to install Windows 10 operating system on your computer that uses the UEFI firmware.

Alternatively, you can make Windows 10 bootable USB stick with supporting UEFI boot mode using CMD.  Detailed steps are given below:

✎ Note: Before the operation, you should prepare an ISO file; all data on the USB drive will be erased, you can backup files at first if you don’t want to lose them.

Step1. Insert your USB to the Windows 10 computer and ensure that it can be detected.

Step 2. Run Diskpart as administrator. Press Windows +R at the same time, input diskpart and hit Enter key.

Step 3. In Diskpart interface, run commands as follows:

β–ͺ list disk β–ͺ select disk n: “n” refers to disk number of your USB drive; x is one of the available drive letters that can be assigned to the partition. β–ͺ clean β–ͺ create partition primary β–ͺ format fs=fat32 quick: If you want to create Legacy bootable USB drive, type format fs=fat32 instead. β–ͺ assign letter =x β–ͺ active β–ͺ exit

Step 4. Insert the Windows 10 installation CD/DVD into the PC and open File Explorer to locate the drive letter of the Windows CD/DVD drive and the USB drive.

Step 5. go to the boot folder of the Windows 10 ISO files by running the commands listed below:

β–ͺ g: 

β–ͺ cd boot

Note: g is the drive letter of your mount drive as it appears in File Explorer.

Step 6. Then, run those commands and wait for the process to complete.

β–ͺ bootsect /nt60 N:

β–ͺ xcopy G:\*.* N:\ /E /F /H

Note: Replace G with the drive letter of your DVD and replace N with the drive letter of your USB flash drive; 

After creating the UEFI boot USB drive of Windows 10 from ISO using CMD utility, you can insert the USB to the computer that you need to install operating system and boot from the USB drive to launch the "Windows Setup" wizard and continue with the installation process.
