Reset PC password for local account users

Using a local account with Windows 10 or Windows 11 has become increasingly complicated, so it’s also a little difficult to reset local account passwords on Windows PC.

If you select the local account, you must have already configured a few security questions and answers during the OS installation process. Hence, if you want to reset your Windows password, simply answer the three questions correctly and then reset your password.

◤ For Windows 11 and Windows 10 Version 1803 (and beyond) users

If you added security questions when you set up your local account for Windows 10, then you can answer security questions to sign back in. After you've entered an incorrect password:

Step 1. Select the Reset password link on the sign-in screen. If you use a PIN instead, see PIN sign-in issues.

Note: If you're using a work device that's on a network, you may not see an option to reset your password or PIN. In that case, contact your administrator.

Step 2. Answer your security questions. Enter a new password.

Then you can sign in as usual with the new password.

◤ For Windows 10 before version 1803 users

Because there are no security questions in versions of Windows 10 prior to 1803, local account passwords cannot be changed. You may reset your device to pick a new password, but doing so will remove all of your data, applications, and settings.

To reset your device, you can follow the steps.

Step 1. Press the Shift key while you select the Power button > Restart in the lower-right corner of the screen.

Step 3. Select Remove everything.
