What is dynamic volume?

Dynamic disk is similar to a basic disk that can use the master boot record (MBR) or GUID partition table (GPT) partitioning scheme to store data. All volumes on dynamic disks are known as dynamic volumes. The dynamic disk can create volumes that span multiple disks (spanned and striped volumes), and the ability to create fault-tolerant volumes (mirrored and RAID-5 volumes).

In general, there are five dynamic volume types: simple volume, spanned volume, striped volume, mirrored volume, and RAID-5 volumes. You can learn more about these types in the dynamic disk and dynamic volume. Unlike basic disk, dynamic disk gives greater flexibility in volume management since it tracks disk and volume information using a database.

The reason why move dynamic volume?

On a basic disk, if your C drive is running out of space, you’re likely to move unallocated space to the C drive to extend it. When the unallocated space is next to the D drive and cannot be extended directly, you need to move the D drive to the right side and make the unallocated space adjacent to the C drive. This kind of situation could happen on dynamic disks as well.

One user seeks help on the forum saying that he cannot resize and move dynamic disk partition. When he resizes one of the dynamic disks in Disk Management, the generated space only exits on the left side of the partition. In that case, he cannot increase a particular partition using that space. If there is a way to move that volume slice to the appointed location, he could complete volume extending like a breeze. What’s more, keeping dynamic volumes in sequences helps manage stored data in order.

Move dynamic partition via a third-party tool

That is too bad that you cannot move a dynamic volume through Windows Disk Management, not even a basic disk partition. Under such circumstances, it is a good idea to turn to a powerful third-party partition manager like AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional.

With the help of this partition manager, you are allowed to resize dynamic disk volume without losing data; extend dynamic system volume to solve “Low disk space on C drive” issue; shrink dynamic volume to generate unallocated space; delete or format dynamic volume to free up disk space, and move slice to change the location of dynamic volume flexibly. Creating a new dynamic volume is also available.

How to move dynamic disk partition step by step?

Now, we will show you how to use AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional to move dynamic partition. First, you should download and install AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional. Here, you can see all the disks on the computer and their current status. Find your dynamic disk on the right, and then click Dynamic Disk.

Step 1: Right-click the target disk, and choose “Dynamic Disk Manager”.

Step 2: In the Dynamic Disk Manager window, right-click the target drive, select "Resize/Move Volume".

Step 3:  You can drag the button to adjust the size of this drive, and click "OK", "

Tips: ☞ This works when there is unallocated space before or after the volume you want to move. It is not supported moving between volumes. ☞ You can extend the first dynamic volume I: to the unallocated space with Resize/Move Volume as well.

Conclusion

From what has been discussed above, this article shows you how to move dynamic volume. AOMEI Partition Assistant is a very powerful tool, no matter to manage basic disks or dynamic disks, it can come in handy. In addition to resizing and moving dynamic volumes, it can also realize the conversion between basic disks and dynamic disks. If you want to manage the disk more easily, please don’t miss it. By the way, if you want to use it in Windows Server, please try AOMEI Partition Assistant Server.
