If you want to extend a dynamic volume, but there is not contiguous unallocated space, then you can move volume slice from one disk to another, which can help generate contiguous unallocated space to extend the dynamic volume successfully.
To extend dynamic (system) volume, there must be some contiguous unallocated space on the same disk. Normally, we can shrink other volume to generate unallocated space, but if other volumes haven’t available free space to be shrunk. What shall we do? In such a case, you can use AOMEI Partition Assistant Server, which comes with a dynamic disk manager. Its “Move Volume Slice Wizard” can migrate volume slice from one disk to another. Then you can get the contiguous unallocated space.
To complete this operation, there must be another empty dynamic disk or some unallocated space which is equal or larger than the volume slice you want to move.
Step 1. Install and run the AOMEI Partition Assistant Server. After choosing the target disk, select the “Dynamic Disk Manager” on the right pane. Then you will enter a new interface, here you need to click “Move Volume Slice Wizard” on the left “Wizards” menu.
Step 2. Click "Move Volume Slice Wizard" in the left navigation. In the pop-up window, the descriptions can help you learn more about volume slice and why use the wizard. Then, click "Next" to continue.
Step 3. In the following dialogue box, please select the volume you want to move.
Step 4. Specify the slices that need to be moved. Then, click "Next".
Step 5. Select the destination disk where the volume slice will be moved on.
Step 6. After clicking "Finish", you will find the F: volume has been moved from disk 2 to disk 4, and some unallocated space generates on disk 2. Then, click "Commit" to apply the changes to the physical disk.
Now, with the help of moving volume slice, you can use the unallocated space to extend dynamic system volume to fix low disk space problem.
Tip: For striped volume, mirrored volume and RAID-5 volume, you should tick the option: I need to move volume slices from one disk to another disk.
