SSDs are progressively replacing traditional HDDs as storage devices due to mechanisms that enable better performance, lower energy consumption, and faster read and write speeds. SSDs are significantly more expensive than hard drives due to their numerous benefits, yet they, like traditional hard disk drives, are prone to damage after continuous use.

If you want to keep track of the status of your SSD, you should use an SSD error check tool. These useful tools assist in optimizing the performance and longevity of your SSD.

So in this post, we’ll show you how to choose a nice SSD tester and some popular SSD diagnostic tools for your reference.

About the SSD error check tool

SSDs are predicted to be destroyed or have a negative influence on performance after lengthy use. There are several SSD testing applications on the market, each with its own set of functionality for managing SSD. They are commonly used to test SSD transfer speed, measure SSD performance, optimize SSD, and so on. Some even allow you to securely wipe an SSD.

Given this, you should carefully examine the software's description to see if it includes the functionality you want.

Check errors The first function is to display to user if the SSD is healthy or if it contains abnormal errors. Some SSD check programs will display the present state of your SSD as well as its health status.

Test speed Most users choose to use an SSD instead of an HDD for its faster speed. So SSD/Disk benchmark is a basic feature of SSD health check programs that may assess your SSD performance by evaluating the SSD transfer speed. After measuring the speed of your SSD, you will know whether the write/read data provided by the manufacturer is correct.

Optimize performance Usually, most SSD tools will also carry some functions like garbage collection or 4K alignment to improve the performance of the disk.

Secure erase For SSD, its lifespan is heavily affected by the total number of terabytes written over time (TBW) and the drive writes per day (DWPD). It can’t be wiped like an HDD. Secure erasing features can clear sensitive information meanwhile minimize the SSD lifespan damage of erasing.

SSD check tool is necessary to maintain your SSD. There are many popular SSD tools on the market, in the next part, you’ll learn some prevalent SSD maintenance software.

Popular SSD check tool for Windows OS

Tool 1. Samsung Magician

If you’re a Samsung SSD user, you can download Samsung Magician Software from official website to get the specific Samsung disk check tool. Users can take a quick glance to look through drive's overall health, temperature, performance, optimization rates, and more. And it offers the S.M.A.R.T check. You can inspect the health of your SSD and detect failures before they happen.

Since it’s designed for Samsung products, the performance benchmark test can even customize your test conditions by adjusting test volume, chunk size, and more. In addition, it has secure erase, PSID revert, drive encryption, etc.

The only problem is that it only supports Samsung disks. If you’re using other brands, this tool is not for your case.

Tool 2. Intel SSD toolbox

Just like Samsung, Intel SSD also has its own support tool. The program gives access to Intel SSD administration capabilities as well as the ability to execute diagnostic scans to detect write or read faults. In addition to managing SSDs, the toolbox may be used to get critical information about traditional hard drives, such as the model, serial, or firmware number.

The same problem as Samsung Magician, this tool also supports Intel disk only.

Tool 3. AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional

As you can see, although Samsung Magician and Intel SSD Toolbox have helpful features, they only support their own brands. You can search for the brands of your SSD, many SSD brands have their own disk test tool. But usually, they don’t have many features to offer you all-around service.

So, to break the limitation of brands and unlock more functions to better maintain your SSD, you can turn to AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional. It is a disk and partition management tool for Windows 11/10/8/8.1/7/XP system, with no brand limitation, and all SSD, HDD, USB, SD cards are supported. All functions are quite easy to use.

With this tool, you can: Test disk speed Check disk health Do 4k partition alignment Clone SSD Convert to MBR/GPT without data loss Secure erase SSD Resize partition size Delete disk junk files …

Now, we’ll show you how to secure erase and how to check disk health with this tool. You can also click the above links to enter another guide to learn more about how to use this handy tool.

▶ Secure erase

Step 1. Install and run AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional. In its main interface, click "SSD Secure Erase" under "Wipe" menu.

Step 2. Choose the SSD drive you need to erase from the given disk list and click "Next".

Step 3. Here you can view and check the basic information of the selected SSD drive.

◤ Warning: you might find the SSD drive is in a frozen state, if you click "Next", you will receive an error message shown below. To continue with secure erase, you can refer to the given tutorial to perform a hot swap for the SSD.

Step 4. After a successful hot swap, then click "Next" to start the SSD Secure Erase.

▶ Disk health check

The tool will automatically run the S.M.A.R.T. test on all hard disks on your computer. So, if there is something wrong with your disk, you can see details about it and give you some advice to deal with it.

Step 1. Right-click the target SSD, and hit "Properties" > "Health(SMART)" to see the state of the disk.

Step 2. Then, you will see different three situations of your SSD.

Health Status: Good It means your disk is in a good condition and can be used with confidence. So you can continue to use it as usual.

Health Status: Caution It refers to one or more attributes that are close to the threshold. The disk still can be used normally, but it is recommended to back up data in case of some accidents.

Health Status: Bad This situation means one or more attributes are equal to or less than the threshold. The disk may be damaged soon and cause data loss. Thus, you’d better replace it with a new one as soon as possible.

Step 3. In each interface, you can click "View details" to see specific S.M.A.R.T. values, red text indicates that the value of the item is equal to or exceeds the threshold.

◤ Tip: you can also run CHKDSK to check the disk.

To sum up

There are many other nice SSD error check tools on the market. However, if you want to find one that doesn’t have brands limitation and carries many useful functions, it’ll take you some time to search.

AOMEI Partition Assistant is a multifunctional disk tool for Windows users. Besides the mentioned feature, it can also migrate OS only, move installed apps, convert file system between FAT32 and NTFS without formatting, and its formatting feature supports many file systems. Also, there is the Server Edition for Windows Server user to conveniently monitor their disks.
