The reasons to resize C drive

Usually, C drive is the system partition with many important files, which are expected to be found by the operating system while starting Windows. Therefore, even C drive has a small problem, your computer may suffer a big trouble.

For example, the most common problem of C drive is low disk space, and when you meet the warning, serious sufferings are coming - for small, your computer will run slowly and cannot react to commands immediately; for big, your screen may be gray and cannot work at all.

Here, in order to solve the low disk space problem, you need to resize C drive, that is, extend it to optimize disk space usage and get powerful partition and hard disk management to increase the efficiency of Windows-based system administration. How to extend C drive? There are two solutions to solve the problem, one is to do the job with Disk Management, another is with free AOMEI Partition Assistant.

How to resize C drive?

As we already understand the importance of C drive and the reason why resize C drive, next we will talk about how to do this job.

Solution 1: Resize C drive with Disk Management

Disk Management is the built-in software of Windows 10/8/7. When you want to extend a partition with this tool, usually you cannot achieve the job directly. For instance, when you use Disk Management to extend C drive there must be a contiguous unallocated space right behind it, if not, you need to delete the partition right behind C drive so to make an unallocated space, then extend C drive into unallocated space. In this way, you will suffer a big risk of data loss.

Step 1: In the following situation, D drive is the partition right behind C drive. Right click D drive and select "Delete Volume".

There will be a pop-up window, which will note you that this operation will erase all the data on D drive, and select “YES”. If there are some important data on it, you need to backup first with AOMEI Backupper.

Step 2: Right click C drive and select "Extend Volume".

Solution 2: Resize C drive with free AOMEI Partition Assistant

AOMEI Partition Assistant is a profession partition software. It can not only resize the system drive but also resize the encrypted partition. Except resize partition, it also can merge partitions, delete partition, format partition, move partition, split partition, copy disk, copy partition, etc. AOMEI Partition Assistant can fully satisfy your requirements and be useful to help you solve problems.

Step 1: Launch AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition.

Step 2: Right click C and select "Resize/Move Partition".

Note: If there is no unallocated space on the right of the C drive, you need to shrink D drive:  Select D drive and choose Resize function, in the pop-up window, point your mouse on the left board and drag it toward the right side to shrink D so to get the unallocated space you need for C drive, or you can input the exact number. (here, free up 60GB from D drive). Then click “OK” to continue.

Step 3: If there is unallocated space or you've finished D drive shrinking, right click C drive and select "Resize/Move Partition". In the pop-up window, point mouse on right board and drag it rightwards to extend.

Step 4: Click "OK". You can preview the changes in the main console, then click "Apply" button to commit the operations.

Now, we know the two solutions to resize C drive. Obviously, AOMEI Partition Assistant is much better to do the job, not only it has no restrictions and risks, but it has so many other useful features to help solve almost all partition problems.
