Can my SD card be renamed on Windows 10?

After connected my 32GB SD Card to my PC, it has been labeled with “Data”. I want to use it to back up some important photos and name the SD Card drive “Photo”. Can I change the name of the SD card on Windows 10 PC? How to do that?

Way 1. Change name in Windows Explorer

Step 1. In Windows 10, press the Windows + E combination to open Windows File Explorer. In Windows 7, double click Computer to access Windows File Explorer.

Step 2. Locate the SD card based on its capacity and drive letter, then right click it and choose “Rename”.

Step 3. Now, you can input the name that you to assign to the SD card and click Enter. 

Way 2. Rename SD card using CMD

Or you can run Command Prompt as administrator and change the name of the SD card in Windows PC.

Step 1. Press Windows + R, input cmd and hit Enter.

Step 2. In the pop-up window, type “label e: music” and click Enter to rename E drive. Please replace e with the drive letter of your SD card that you want to rename and replace backup with

Way 3. Change label in Disk Management

If it doesn’t have been assigned with a drive letter, the SD card won’t be showing up in Windows Explorer. You can go to Disk Management to assign a drive letter to it and rename it.

Step 1. Open Disk Management: Press Windows + R, input “diskmgmt.msc” and click “OK”.

Step 2. Right-click the SD card that you want to rename and choose “Properties”.

Step 3. In the blank box, type the label that you want to give to the SD card and click “OK”.
