Need to resize partition on Windows 11

Resizing partitions refers to shrinking or extending partitions. Many users may find that their computer running slowly, and even receiving a low disk space warning because of C drive is full, which will cause a serious impact on the performance of Windows 11. Therefore, some users may shrink one partition to extend another or add unallocated space to a partition that runs out of space.

Now, I’m going to show you how to use free tools to resize partitions on Windows 11, including Windows built-in utility Disk Management and a third-party freeware AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard.

Resize partition on Windows 11 with Disk Management

Disk Management is a built-in tool that would directly resize partitions on Windows 11. Using this utility, you can perform various operations including resizing, formatting, and deleting partitions. Please follow the steps below to resize (shrink or extend) the partition in Windows 11:

Shrink a partition

Step 1. Press and hold the "Windows + R" at the same time, then type "diskmgmt. msc" in the window ejected.

Step 2. Right-click the partition you want to resize and select "Shrink Volume".

Step 3. In the following window, input the amount of space you want to shrink and click "Shrink".

Tip: To shrink a partition with Disk Management, the partition must be NTFS or RAW and there should not be unmovable files in the end of the partition you want to shrink. If you ignore those demands, this button will be greyed out.

Extend a partition

Step 1. Open Disk Management as the step mentioned before.

Step 2. Right-click on the partition you want to extend and select "Extend Volume".

Step 3. Follow the popped guide to complete the rest steps.

Tip: To extend a partition with Disk Management, there must be an unallocated space next to the partition, and the partition must be NTFS or RAW, or Extend Volume will be greyed out.

Using free tool to resize partition on Windows 11

Although we can use Disk Management to resize partitions, there’re many limitations when we operate it. For example, the partition must be NTFS or RAW and unmovable files cannot exist at the end of the partition you want to shrink, or "Shrink Volume" will be greyed out. Besides, if you choose the target partition incorrectly, it will result in the loss of some important data.

If your partition has enabled Bitlocker encryption, don't worry, AOMEI software makes it possible to adjust the size of encrypted partitions. Please don’t cut off the power while resizing partitions. If it’s a laptop, please make the power cord connect properly for charging the battery. Please don’t click "Apply" when there are already too many tasks pending.

Step 1. Right-click the partition with much free space and hit "Resize/Move Partition".

Step 2. Put your mouse on the little circle of the right border and move the double-headed arrow leftward to resize the partition selected. Then, click "OK".  (To extend the D drive you chose, you should move the double-headed arrow rightward.)

Step 3. Click "Apply" to skim the pending operation and then click "Proceed" to commit the operation.

Further tip:  If there’s an adjacent unallocated space next to D drive, you can use Resize Partition to extend it. But if there’s not, you can try "Merge Partition" to extend the target drive.
